The Village Reimagined
Rationale of the theme
This conference celebrates and bears witness to the vital role of Therapeutic Communities (TCs) as beacons of hope for individuals pursuing personal growth through deep connections with themselves and others. Inspired by the concluding reflections of the Genoa Manifesto, this theme invites us to look beyond the traditional, physical boundaries of our facilities and conceptualise the TC model as a "Village Reimagined." By reviewing our framework as a holistic, bio-psycho-social-spiritual model, we explore how the principles of an enabling environment can extend far into the wider world.
The conference serves a dual purpose. First, it offers a dedicated space to ground ourselves in our foundational roots and the core elements of the community-as-method approach—the essential structures of our "village." Second, it provides a forward-looking opportunity to innovate, exploring how these communal principles can be adapted across diverse settings, varied client populations, and specialised structures.
By viewing the TC as an enabling network rather than an isolated sanctuary, we can examine how the TC model seamlessly integrates with contemporary paradigms in social care, including trauma-responsive systems, attachment-informed practices, and prosocial care.
This gathering charts the natural maturation of our field: a movement that, whilst rooted in its heritage, gently matures past structures toward flexible, highly relational standards. Ultimately, this growth allows the therapeutic community to expand its reach, naturally transplanting its ethos of belonging and healing into non-traditional sectors and the broader fabric of society.
